Before implementing this method, I typically cut the avocado in two and used a spoon to scoop out the flesh, thinking I was getting most of the fruit. However, that is not the case at all.

The spoon method does not get that dark layer right under the skin that holds most of the nutritional value in an avocado!

I learned this “nick and peel” technique for cutting and peeling and avocado while on a press tour with the California Avocado Commission. Along with this method, I learned a lot of helpful information about avocados!

Avocado Peeling Facts:

  2. Using this method is quick & easy. Plus no special peeler is needed, just a regular kitchen knife will do!

FAQ’s

How do I know if my avocado is ripe?

Hass avocados usually turn dark green to purplish-black when they’re ripe. Additionally, when you gently squeeze an avocado in the palm of your hand, if it’s ripe, it will yield to gentle pressure.

Is it good to refrigerate avocados?

The cold air from the fridge slows down the ripening process, so it is not a good idea to put them in the refrigerator before cutting if you need them soon. After peeling an avocado, it will not last long before browning. Storing it in the fridge will help prolong the freshness but only for a day or two at the most.

To make the most of your avocados, I suggest you cut and peel them using this method. It’s easier, safer, and keeps all the nutrient-rich fruit intact.

  1. I’ve been prepping avocados that way for ages. It has a lot to do with having a neighbor in FL with an avocado tree. Lots of avocados to play with! Glad you discovered it! Thanks!

    1. A few months back I went to an avocado tour with the CA Avocado Commission and they prepped their avocados this way by quartering them. Everyone in the room was like “that makes complete sense!”. I have never seen avocados cut this way before; on cooking shows you always see them cutting the avocado in half and then they use a knife or spoon to get the pit out.
Anyhow, glad you already knew this method, you’re ahead of the curve! 🙂
