10 Uses For Apple Pie Spice

  1. Snickerdoodles. Instead of rolling the cookie dough in cinnamon & sugar, swap out the cinnamon for this Apple Pie Spice recipe. Amazing! Check out my Snickerdoodles recipe!
  2. Oatmeal. Sprinkle the spice mix on your oatmeal in the morning, and instead of using water in your oatmeal, use apple juice or apple cider. Yum!
  3. Spiced Nuts. Make sweet spiced nuts and use Apple Pie Spice instead of the spices the recipe calls for. BONUS: I like to add some of these nuts as a topping to apple crisp!
  4. Pasta. One of my favorite quick & easy dinners for fall is Buttered Pasta with a little Apple Pie Spice and Parmesan cheese sprinkled over the top. If you’re feeling adventurous, add some roasted Brussels sprouts to the pasta & brown the butter instead of melting it. BAM, perfect autumn pasta!
  5. Rice Krispie Treats. Add a little to your Rice Krispie Treats and instantly have a fall dessert the kids will love. BONUS: Add some melted pumpkin spice candy melts to the top, and you’ve got a quick, easy, AH-mazing fall dessert!
  6. Smoothies. I like making a vanilla protein smoothie and adding a little Apple Pie Spice. Instant fall in a cup. Plus, it’s healthy, too.
  7. Whipped Cream. Add a sprinkle to your freshly whipped cream, and top off your favorite fall pie. Di-vine!
  8. Sugar Scrub. Make a sugar scrub. Add one teaspoon of this spice mix for every cup of sugar in your recipe. Put it in a jar, wrap it with a bow, and you’ve got yourself a fabulous hostess gift.
  9. Popcorn. Sprinkle a little on freshly popped and buttered popcorn. It makes a great snack.
  10. French Toast. Swap out the cinnamon in the recipe for this spice mix. You’ll thank me later.

Serving and Storing Tips

STORE: Proper storage is essential to keep your homemade apple pie spice fresh and flavorful. Here’s how you should store it:

  1. Choose an airtight container: Store the spice blend in an airtight container to prevent moisture and air from getting in, which can cause the spices to lose their potency.
  2. Keep away from heat and light: Store the container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A pantry or cupboard is the best location.
  3. Label the container: Make sure to label the container with the name of the spice blend and the date of preparation. This helps you keep track of its freshness.
  4. Use within a reasonable timeframe: While spices don’t necessarily spoil, they do lose their flavor over time. For optimal flavor, use your homemade apple pie spice within six months to a year.

FREEZE: If you make a larger batch of homemade apple pie spice or want to extend its shelf life, freezing can be a viable option. Follow these steps:

  1. Airtight packaging: Place the spice blend in an airtight, freezer-safe container or a resealable plastic bag.
  2. Label and date: Label each container or bag with the spice blend name and the date you prepared it. This helps you keep track of its freshness.
  3. Freeze: Place the container or bag in the freezer. The cold temperature will help preserve the spice mix for up to two years.

Recipe FAQs

What’s the difference between pumpkin pie spice and apple pie spice?

The two are popular options during the fall season but have a key difference. Pumpkin Spice is made with cloves, and Apple Pie Spice is not. Another difference is that my recipe is made with cardamom.

What is pie spice made of?

My recipe calls for five simple ingredients: cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cardamom.

Lot’s of creative uses for this toasty tasty spice blend. I will try in my oatmeal and smoothies for sure. I’m thinking of making a pumpkin pie using this blend. I will be similar but just a bit different. Pumpkin Pie is the only dessert I bake so I need to switch it up occasionally. The Hubby will love this.
