This Grilled Pineapple Recipe with brown sugar and honey screams summer! It’s a great side dish for barbecues and a healthy dessert.
This recipe costs $2.88 to make. It makes six servings, which is just $0.48 per serving.
This recipe pairs perfectly with grilled teriyaki chicken, Hawaiian chicken, ribs, etc. The possibilities are endless!
The pineapple slices are coated in a brown sugar-honey glaze and then grilled to perfection. The result is a sweet side dish that is the perfect addition to any summer BBQ.
You won’t believe how easy this is to make and how satisfying the taste is. The pineapple is extra sweet, tender, and truly melts in your mouth after marinating in the brown sugar and honey glaze and grilling it.
I could probably eat grilled pineapple all by itself and be completely satisfied. However, I have these little people in my house who demand food EVERY DAY!
And they want more than just grilled pineapple. The nerve, right?! It is actually my pleasure to cook for my family and bring them joy through my creations.
Ingredients and Cost
Per Serving Cost: $0.48
Recipe Cost: $2.88
- 1 large pineapple – $2.48
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar – $0.06
- 2 Tablespoons honey – $0.34
- 1 Tablespoon hot water – $0.00
NOTE: The recipe prices are calculated by using grocery store websites. The actual cost of the recipe will vary depending on what ingredients you already have.
Instructions
- First, whisk together the brown sugar, honey, hot water, and salt.
- Next, place the pineapple in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag and add the brown sugar mixture. Shake the bag until the pineapple is evenly coated.
- Let the pineapple sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat the grill on high. After scraping the grates, lightly oil them with canola oil.
- Finally, place the pineapple slices on the grill and grill each side for 2-3 minutes, and then serve.
Recipe Variations
- You can use all honey or all brown sugar in this recipe.
- Instead of honey, you can use maple syrup or agave nectar.
- For an extra flavor kick, add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the honey mixture.
- You could use canned pineapple in this recipe, but it will not be nearly as tasty as fresh pineapple. I really do not recommend this route, but if you do, the cooking time will be reduced since the slices are thinner.
Storage Tips
SERVE: You can keep the grilled pineapple at room temperature for about 2 hours before you need to refrigerate it.
STORE: Once the pineapple cools, store covered in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
FREEZE: While defrosted grilled pineapple loses a lot of its firm texture, you can freeze this recipe. Once cool, place in a freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag and freeze for 1-2 months. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for about an hour.
Recipe FAQs
First, preheat your grill to high heat. After the grill reaches high heat clean the grates and then lightly oil them with canola oil. Set the pineapple rings directly on the grill for about 2-3 minutes. Wait for those grill marks to appear. Lastly, flip the pineapple over and repeat the process on the other side. Remove from the grill and enjoy!
My all-time favorite meal to serve with grilled pineapple is my chicken teriyaki. The flavors of the pineapple and the teriyaki sauce go together oh so well.
You can also serve grilled pineapple with ice cream.
There is one little trick to make your pineapple taste sweeter. Just add a little salt! It seems weird, right? However, salt suppresses the bitter flavor within the fruit, which then plays a little trick on your brain, making it think the fruit is sweeter than it actually is.
How to keep pineapple from hurting your mouth?
There are 3 tips that will save your mouth from hurting while eating pineapple.
- The biggest issue with burning mouths while eating pineapple is because the pineapple is not ripe. So, wait to eat the pineapple until after it is fully ripe and be sure to rinse the pineapple before you eat it.
- The second tip is to remove the core of the pineapple when you cut it. The core is the part of the fruit that makes it burn your mouth the most.
- The last tip is to sprinkle lime juice on the pineapple. You only need a teaspoon to sprinkle over the pineapple. Lime juice adds some sweetness to the pineapple, without affecting the flavor. It also reduces the acidity within the pineapple which is causing the burning in your mouth.
Try any of these tips to avoid that burning sensation in your mouth the next time you eat pineapple.
