I grew up thinking I didn’t like Sloppy Joes. It was not until years later; I realized I do like Sloppy Joes. It’s all about how you make them. 

So what was my issue all those years as a child? It was the canned sauce I didn’t like. I get why everyone uses it; it is super convenient. It is just not the tastiest. 

Because of this, I set out on a mission to make my version of Sloppy Joes that no one would have to gag down. I now present to you my Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe recipe!

Where does Sloppy Joe come from?

Many people believe the origination of this delicious sandwich began in the 1930s in a cafe in Iowa. A man named Joe put some tomato sauce on his loose meat sandwich and thus created the first-ever Sloppy Joe. 

What’s on a traditional Philly cheesesteak?

A traditional Philly cheesesteak is full of tasty flavors. The ingredients include rib eye beef, melted cheese, and a delicious roll. You can top it with additional components such as fried onions, peppers, and mushrooms. 

How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes:

  1. Brown the meat.
  2. Add the veggies and cook until softened.
  3. Add the Worcestershire and stock. Cook until almost evaporated.
  4. Make the cheese sauce.
  5. Assemble and eat!

  • 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil – $0.14
  • 1 pound lean ground beef – $3.60
  • Salt and pepper to taste – $0.01
  • 1 medium bell pepper diced – $0.62
  • 1 large yellow onion diced – $0.62
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce – $0.06
  • ½ cup beef stock – $0.24
  • 1 Tablespoon butter – $0.10
  • 1 ½ Tablespoon four – $0.03
  • 4 submarine rolls – $1.84
  • 1 cup milk – $0.16
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese – $0.64

Cook’s Note

  • Here’s a trick to fit more meat onto the submarine roll: before toasting, split the roll in half and remove most of the soft insides of the bottom roll. This method will create a nice little well for more of the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe mixture to fill.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes Recipe

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • medium saucepan
  • whisk

Ingredients
 
 

  • 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium bell pepper diced
  • 1 large yellow onion diced
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef stock
  • Salt and pepper to taste

CHEESE SAUCE:

  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 ½ Tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup milk any kind but skim
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 submarine rolls split in half and toasted

Instructions

  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil, swirl it around the pan and add ground beef. Using the back of a wooden spoon break up ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-6 minutes.
  • Add bell pepper and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender; 3-4 minutes. Add Worcestershire sauce and beef stock. Bring mixture to bubble and continue to cook until almost all liquid is evaporated; 3-4 minutes.

MAKE CHEESE SAUCE:

  • While meat cooks, make the cheese sauce. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly for about 1 minute. Whisk in milk and bring to a low boil. Continue to boil, whisking frequently, until thickened; about 2 minutes. Take the saucepan off the heat, add shredded cheese and stir until cheese is completely melted.
  • TO FINISH:
  • Add ¼ of the meat mixture to a toasted roll. Top with cheese sauce. Repeat with remaining rolls and serve!

    Oh yum! As a Philly girl, I love a good cheesesteak! I usually use the Kraft slices on our cheesesteaks, but it makes so much more sense to use the shredded cheese. Great idea! #client
