How To Smoke Mashed Potatoes

NOTE: I use a wood pellet grill for most of this process. More specifically, this recipe assumes you have a Traeger smoker/grill

  1. Wash and cut the potatoes.
  2. Add the potatoes to a large saucepan, cover it with water, and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Boil potatoes until they’re fork-tender (about 15-20 minutes).
  3. Drain the water from the potatoes and place them in a large mixing bowl.
The potatoes cut on a cutting board and then cooked in boiling water.
  4. Mash the potatoes until your desired consistency is reached.
  5. Add butter, heavy cream, and sour cream. Fold these ingredients into the mashed potatoes.
  6. Add salt and pepper to taste.
The potatoes mashed and with the butter, heavy cream, sour cream, and salt and pepper added to it.
  7. Transfer the potatoes to a cast iron skillet and spread them evenly.
  8. Preheat your pellet grill to 225 degrees F. Smoke your mashed potatoes for 30-45 min. Increase the smoker temperature to 350 degrees F and smoke for 20-30 minutes or until bubbly and lightly browned.
  9. Garnish (optional) and serve your mashed potatoes warm.

Storage Tips

SERVE: As stated above, you’ll want to serve these immediately so they stay warm. However, if you need to hold over the potatoes at temp, turn the temperature down to 225° on the smoker and cover them tightly with foil. Don’t let them sit for more than 2 hours at room temperature!

STORE: 3-4 days is about the max for smoked mashed potatoes in the fridge. As always, use an airtight container.

FREEZE: In a freezer-safe bag, smoked mashed potatoes stay “good” for up to 3 months.

REHEAT: Thaw your potatoes if you need to do so, then reheat them on the stove or in the oven. Add liquids like milk or water to alleviate any dryness if necessary.
