How to Cut Butternut Squash
I love making butternut squash recipes during the fall; butternut squash soup and roasted butternut squash to name a few. But I have to admit; butternut squash is not exactly my favorite thing to cut, peel and chop.
I mean, I really, really hate it. It’s hard to cut, I usually end up with blisters after muscling my way through it, plus it’s a little scary. That is until I made this simple switch! Read on for my tutorial on How to Peel and Cut Butternut Squash!
My secret weapon for How to Peel and Cut Butternut Squash like a rock star is all in the knife! You need to use a large, sharp chef knife. And when I say sharp, I mean sharp! I am embarrassed to say it, but that has been my mistake in the past. I used cheap, dull knives. But not anymore! I have fallen in love with my new Calphalon Self-Sharpening Cutlery Set. You heard me right, self-sharpening! Let me introduce you:
This cutlery set features Calphalon’s SharpIN Technology, where ceramic sharpeners are built into the knife block slots. Every time a knife is taken from the knife block, it gets sharpened. Genius, right? No need to ever wonder if your knives are sharp ever again!
How to Peel and Cut Butternut Squash
- Cut off the stem.
- Cut off the root end.
- Cut the squash in half where the neck meets the thicker base. To easily do this, slice the knife forward and then wedge it into the squash. While holding the base of the squash, rotate it while slicing through.
- Peel the squash by using a paring knife or vegetable peeler.
- Cut the base in half to expose the seeds and stringy pulp.
- Use a spoon to scrape out the seeds and pulp.
- Cut the squash into 1-inch wide strips then into 1-inch chunks.
