SAUSAGE CHEESE BALLS QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

How do you tell if sausage balls are done?

After baking the sausage balls for about 18 minutes, check on them. Once the tops are slightly browned then you know your job is done and they are done cooking!

How do you store sausage balls?

Keep the sausage balls in an airtight container. When stored this way they will stay fresh in the fridge for about 2 days or up to one month in the freezer.

How do you reheat refrigerated sausage balls?

If you are reheating sausage balls from the fridge simply loosely wrap them in a paper towel, and microwave for 30 seconds. If you are reheating sausage balls from the freezer follow the same process but microwave them for 1 minute instead.

How to make Sausage and Cheese Balls:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with foil.
  2. Next, place flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor and pulse for 3 seconds. Then add butter and pulse for another 10 seconds.
  3. Now add sausage, cream cheese, cheddar, and milk and pulse until combined. I am using the 12oz package of Farmer John® Breakfast Sausage, but when shopping at Smith’s look for the 8oz package, too!
  4. Finally, using a 4 Tablespoon scoop, scoop sausage mixture and roll it into a ball before placing it on the baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes.

FOR SAUSAGE BALLS:

FOR THE MUSTARD DIPPING SAUCE:

Instructions

MAKE SAUSAGE BALLS:

  • Move oven rack to the middle position and preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with foil or parchment paper; set aside.
  • Place flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor and pulse for 3 seconds, or until combined.
  • Sprinkle butter pieces over flour and pulse for 10 seconds or until the mixture looks like a coarse meal.
Process the dry ingredients until they resemble coarse crumbs.
  • Add sausage, cream cheese, cheddar, and milk.
Add the sausage, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese to the food processor.
  • Pulse for 6-8 pulses, or until combined (make sure you don’t over-mix or else the sausage balls will be tough when cooked).
Process until the mixture is well combined.
  • Use a 2-tablespoon scoop to scoop the sausage mixture. Roll mixture into a ball and then place it on the prepared baking sheets, spacing balls 1 ½ inches apart. Repeat with remaining sausage mixture.
Scoop the sausage mixture into balls and arrange them on the trays.
  • Bake for 18-20 minute, rotating pans halfway through baking, or until golden brown. Let the sausage balls cool slightly before serving.
Bake the balls until they are lightly browned.

FOR MUSTARD DIPPING SAUCE:

  • While the sausage balls bake, make the sauce. Mix all of the ingredients together in a small bowl. Chill until you’re ready to use.
Whisk together all of the ingredients for the mustard dip.

SERVE:

  • Serve the sausage balls warm with mustard dipping sauce.

  1. These sound absolutely delicios and would love to make these but our grocery stores up here do not carry Farmer John sausage, but we do have Hillshire Farms or Bob Evans. I also don’t own a food processor so would have to mix everything by hand. Would that be okay?
