What can I use instead of marshmallow for Rice Krispie Treats?
You can use honey as a substitute for marshmallows. Boil the honey first for one minute before adding the other ingredients. Just note that while honey is sweet, it will change the taste of the recipe.
Why are my Rice Krispie Treats falling apart?
Rice Krispies that are too dry or too sticky and fall apart is the worst! This typically happens because there is too much cereal. Measure twice and pour once is my philosophy!
Make sure you get the ratio of marshmallow to cereal correct. Otherwise, with too much cereal, you will have dry, crunchy treats, or if you have too many marshmallows, you will have overly sticky treats.
How do you cut Rice Krispie treats neatly?
First, let the treats cool completely in the pan. Then, lift them out of the pan onto a cutting board. Spray a pizza cutter or large knife with cooking spray to neatly cut the Rice Krispie treats into uniform squares.
How to make Christmas Rice Krispie Treats:
STEP ONE: First, line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Set the sheet aside while you pre-measure the ingredients.
STEP TWO: Next, melt the butter, salt, and marshmallows together in a large saucepan. Once smooth, remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
STEP THREE: Then, stir in the remaining marshmallows. Once the cereal is thoroughly coated, fold in the M&Ms and sprinkles.
STEP FOUR: To finish, top with extra M&Ms and sprinkles and gently press the mixture into the pan.
How long will these Christmas Treats keep for?
SERVE: You can keep these out at room temperature for a few hours. They’re a great Christmas treat to leave out during parties for hours.
STORE: Store these in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week.
FREEZE: I do not recommend storing these in the refrigerator or freezing them. The cold will make these treats super hard.

Christmas Rice Krispie Treats
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 10 cups mini marshmallows divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 cup Christmas M&Ms
- 2 teaspoons Christmas sprinkles

- Pre-measure all the ingredients before beginning the recipe because things move fast.
- Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on 2 sides. Lightly coat with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
- Melt butter, salt, and 8 cups of marshmallows in a large pot or saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the mixture is smooth.
- Remove the pot from the heat and quickly stir in vanilla. Next, stir in the cereals and the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows. Stir until the cereal is coated in the marshmallow mixture.
- Fold in the M&Ms and sprinkles.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Lightly grease your hands and press the mixture into an even layer.
- Top the treats with extra M&Ms and sprinkles and gently press them into the treats so they stick.
SET AND SERVE:
- Let the treats set for 30 minutes.
- Use the parchment paper overhang to remove the treats from the pan. Slice into 15 treats (5 rows of 3) and serve.
- Salted butter may be used; omit the salt.
- Corn Chex cereal may be used in place of Rice Chex.
- Don’t add the M&M’s in too soon, or the color will bleed throughout the Rice Krispie treat mixture.
